About This Item
Hardcover . Used - very good. Index (incorrectly?) states that it covers June-Dec. 308pp. Bound without original magazine covers in full-calf, with gilt ornamentation to borders, gilt lettering to spine, and ownerâs name in gilt on front cover. Marbled endpapers. 7 hand-colored illustrations, 3 of which are fashion plates, the others embossed decorations, etc., plus 9 steel-engraved plates (opposite pp. 1, 2, 49, 97, 140, 146, 193, 253(2), the one opposite page 253 with 1â tear, just reaching illustration). The un-colored fashion plate, opposite p. 145 has a 2â closed tear, affecting male figure; there is an accompanying tear to following page, with no loss of text. Covers are moderately rubbed, spine gilt affected but still legible, however, front hinge cracked yet binding remains sound, the text and illustrations with just occasional light foxing. Hand-colored illustrations notwithstanding, most of the value of this volume is due to the contributions of Edgar Allan Poe, including the following: A Few Words on Secret Writing, pp. 33-38 (July issue) The Colloquy of Monos and Una, pp. 52-55 (Aug.) Response to âSecret Writingâ (Aug) To Helen, p.123 (Sept.) Never Bet your Head, p. 124-7 (Sept) Israfel, p.183 (Oct.) A Chapter on Autography (part 1) pp. 224-234 (Nov.) A Chapter on Autography (part 2) pp. 273-286 (Dec.)
