About This Item
Amsterdam: Johannes Wolters, 1714. Calfskin. Very Good. Theophili Golii Grammatica Graeca, sive Educatio Puerilis Linguae Graecae. Pro Gymnasio Argentinensi primum conscripta, jamque denuo ab Authore aucta & recognita. Editio novissima prioribus corectior & distinctior. Amstaelodami, apud Joannem Wolters, 1714. Front endpapers bear a 1726 young scholar's note as well as the bookplate of oil tycoon John W. McReynolds; a few additional, small inky spots and one brief note within the page block, none obstructive; ffep and first blank leaf bear open tears at bottom free corners and a short closed tear at foreedge of title, and both endpapers show light foxing, with residue of decoration at page block edges, otherwise sound, two-color printing with some spectacular ligatures. Firmly bound octavo in contemporary calf, five bands, spine panel modestly crazed with a title plate chipped at the right but with gilt remaining; mottled nutmeg-colored boards have fared much better, bearing only a scuff at the upper rear, a smaller one at the left front, and a small pattern of nicks at the upper front, as well as modest wear at edges and spots of wear through to the board at two free corners. Some curious typographic usages: a major I flanked by mirror minor c's forms the M of the date, for example, and the ligatures for omicron-sigma, chi-rho, and theta-anything are positively Voynichean.
