About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co, 1940. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Poor. 9" by 6". None. The first edition of this autobiographical work by John Farleigh. The first edition with unclipped dustwrapper. Illustrated throughout, with photographs as well as examples of etchings and drawings by Farleigh himself and others. This work is also instructional, and informs the reader on several useful aspects of wood engravings such as how to sharpen and hold a tool. John Farleigh was an English wood-engraver best remembered for his illustrations of George Bernard Shaw's The Adventures of the Black Girl in her Search for God. His illustrations for this work have a whole chapter dedicated. In original pictorial boards and held in original dustwrapper. Externally, smart with minor rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Dustwrapper is sound, with loss to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Wrap is sunned, with rubbing to joints. Rear wrap is detached at joint where there is a small amount of loss. Some spots to wrap internally. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Kitty Forbes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed
