About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1973 very tidy first edition of this work, first edition of the scarce UK printing, price clipped DW has a short tear along the top fore edge fold of the lower panel with an associated crease at the top corner of the lower panel, otherwise a very tidy clean dust jacket, with former owner signature and date to fep, a few page corners creased, a minor fingermark to half title, top edge black dusting still strong, one of the gems in a modern first edition fiction collection in a very presentable condition, 760 pages. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7? - 9? tall.

Synopsis

Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, Jr. is an American novelist. TIME Magazine included the novel in its "All-Time 100 Greatest Novels," a list of the best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. This novel; Gravity’s Rainbow is a fabulous work of hysterical realism. The story takes place primarily in Europe at the conclusion of World War II. The narrative centers on Tyrone Slothrop who is an American on a mission to locate V-2 rockets that have been manufactured by the German military. The novel describes misadventures of several unusual characters and illustrates the struggle between those who rebel against the war and those who suppress their identity in order to be able to better serve. Although fictional, the story seamlessly integrates actual historical events into the plot. A fascinating work of penetrating analysis regarding the impact technology makes upon society. Nebula Award Nominee for Novel (1973) , National Book Award for Fiction (1974) , William Dean Howells Award
