About This Item
Chicago: Henry A. Sumner & Company, 1881. Hardcover. Very good. Original olive-brown cloth binding with blindstamped decorations in black and gilt. Peach colored endpapers. 16mo. Frontispiece with tissue guard, 4 engraved plates, 227 pp followed by 13 pp of undated ads. Gift inscription on front free endpaper, dated "Christmas 1885". Contemporary owner's stamp on front pastedown and title page. Zimmerman wrote this novel for boys and girls on behalf of the Woman's Temperence Publication Association to warn them against the dangers of alcohol in its many forms including whiskey and hard cider. This edition was first advertised in the American Bookseller on November 1, 1880. A new edition was subsequently issued in 1886. A very scarce item, particularly in this condition. A "Signal" Story for Boys and Girls. The binding is remarkably bright and clean. One small mark on rear board and very light wear at corners. Light foxing on some portions of the text and pages 78 -79 have a small chip in lower right corner that has no effect on text. Otherwise, a near fine copy.
