London: Hamish Hamilton, 1955. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: 186. FIRST BRITISH EDITION. Light brown dust jacket with lettering in red. Blue cloth covered boards. The first edition with 'First published in Great Britain, 1955'. 'A striking study of the greatest speculative boom in history and of the catastrophe which followed it.' (subtitle). The author wrote the book as a warning about the dangers of an unrestrained speculative mood without proper government oversight. This is a very good copy with the book plate of a previous owner on the front paste down. The jacket has about a half-inch chipped from the base of the spine, a lesser amount chipped at the head of the spine, edge wear, and the remains of a name sticker at the top of the front panel. The jacket is now protected with a Brodart cover.

Tickner & Fields, acknowledging receipt of $50 as payment for an article he had written for Atlantic Magazine, a fond history of his years at Hofwyl school, the independent self-governing private college in Switzerland to which he credited the molding of much of his character and philosophy. In addition to his notorious involvement with social reforms, Owen served in the Indiana legislature and the U.S. House Of Representatives from 1843 to 1847, during which time he introduced and secured passage of the bill to establish the Smithsonian Institution, for which he was appointed to its first board of regents. Never long without controversy, in the 1850 ‘s he turned to spiritualism, and while his book on the subject, "Footfalls On The Boundary Of Another World" was popular with the general public, it only incurred ridicule from a number of his… Read More

Description:
First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
