About This Item

London: Harper & Brothers, 1898. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5.5". Peter Newell. A smart first UK edition of this science fiction novel from American writer Frank Richard Stockton, with illustrations. First UK edition, published the same year as the US edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifty-one plates. Collated complete. In the year 1946, a scientist invents an automatic projectile, powered within itself, much like a rocket. One day the shell falls from the supports on which it lay and ploughed its way with terrific force into the earth—how far, no one could tell. Written by Frank Richard Stockton, an American writer and humorist, best known today for a series of innovative children's fairy tales. Illustrated by Peter Newell, an American artist and writer. In the original pictorial brown cloth binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine. Small splits in the cloth at the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown. Good
