About This Item

NY: Putnam, 1939. 1st Edition. Hardcover_cloth. VeryGood. 6"x8.75" 280 numbered pages. Navy cloth w/red embossed letters on front and spine. Orange paste downs. Frontispiece is B&W photo of author on horse. 9 more B&W photos. Spine slightly slanted, pages clean w/soft tone, sewn binding tight w/muslin exposure. X-library w/graphics, no DJ. Secure ship w/track number. Faint rubs w/light fraying. No vanished era of American life appeals more strongly to the imagination than the opening up of the West and Middle West. The enexobarble westward advance of civilization which made the Indian and the buffalo give way to the cattleman; he in turn to retreat before the sheepherder and the small farmer, has resulted in great industrial cities and modern means of communicatioin whch rob mountains and deserts of their terrors and make the Great West an age of legend. But the freedom, the vigor, the stark simplicity of pioneer days is woven into the very texture of American life and thought. There are few left who can tell of those day from actual experience. Soon there will be none. And because I believe that the account of an eyewitness is of value, I have set down in the following pages a part of my life story in 1878.
