Goldstone had this copy enclosed in a custom green cloth dustjacket with a small leather title on spine and gilt lettering including the words "First Edition 1879" to bottom cloth spine DJ. Copy and DJ are enclosed in a custom made green morocco slipcase with green matching cloth of the DJ. First issue points include date on title page and first ad at rear covering Frances Hodgson Burnett. Book and dustjacket in near fine condition--only normal age toning. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY CONTRIBUTOR William Phipps Blake at front end page - "Professor Joseph Hyde Pratt, Chapel Hill, N.C. with compliments of W.P. Blake (?) Oct. 28, 1908 (Leafs 45)". Phipps contribution starts at p. 45, titled "Geological Sketch of the Region of Tucson, Arizona". Phipps (1826-1910) was the Territorial Geologist of Arizona, a noted mining consultant and educator who started the first school of mines in the Far West in 1864. Professor Joseph Hyde Pratt (1870-1942) was a prominent North Carolina geologist, conservationist, and state and civic leader. A fine copy in original hard wrappers, uncut and protected over the years in a custom chemise and slipcase--which Hersholt had custom made. Besides acting, Hersholt was a noted collector and a noted translator of the works of Hans Christian Anderson into English (translated over 150 works). This copy is labeled with Hersholt's custom gold label and signed by him on the label at the top. In addition the custom chemise has a small sticker with the notation of "No. 576"--From the library of Jean Hersholt". Very fine in a dust jacket with minor wear, else fine. The jacket is much more attractive than usual for this book. The scarcest of Welch's novels, especially in nice condition.

A very nice copy of Sitgreaves Report. 1853. Senate Exec. Doc. 59. All 79 plates are present and the map is professionally reproduced in full size (27 x 47 inches) and placed in rear pocket. Howes S528; Wagner-Camp 230:1; Graff 3809. A note on collation: it is difficult. It helps to have reference materials and more than one copy. I have both and can guarantee this collates complete. Only condition issue is moderate to heavy foxing in places. That is a common problem with this volume. No prior ownership markings, stamps, or vandalism. In a beautiful modern quarter leather and marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. Douglas Duer, illustrator. 335 pp. plus 4 pages of advertisements at back. Text is clean and unmarked but tanned, typical of the paper used in 1912. Light foxing on front free endpapers and title page. Previous owner's attribution stamped on front pastedown. A Western novel about a Mormon woman defending her ranch and the period conflicts between Mormons and Gentiles near the the southern Utah border as written by a classic American writer.
