About This Item

St Vladimirs Seminary Press, November 2007. Paper Back. New. This third volume in the excellent Church in History series offers an account of the Church from the end of the Sixth Ecumenical Council to the Battle of Manzikert-the beginning of the end of the Byzantine Empire-in 1071. Louth presents parallel histories of Eastern and Western Christendom, rather than focusing on the developing schism between the two. Certainly events overlap: the iconoclastic controversy in the East, the rise of the Carolingian Empire in the West. But there is more that is simply independently similar, such as monastic reform and mission. Nevertheless, at the end of the period exist two traditions that have diverged in increasing distinction from one another. 384 pp.
