Complete 18 volume set, half leather with original boards and modern matching spines. 1824. Overall condition is very good. Recent fine binding using original boards. Old blanks are gone, this has new blanks. Only interior markings are pencilled numbers on back of title page. Some foxing in text, heavier in maps. Many pages uncut. 17 unpaginated maps and one plate of vocabulary. Set is a compilation of journals and texts from every major European voyage of discovery from antiquity to 1800. Kerr is not so much an author as an editor. Wherever possible he reproduced the original texts and journals. He edited them to reduce redundancy but maintain fidelity to the original text. His first volume shows the trouble he went to. He has rendered into English 9th century Icelandic texts then proceeds on to 9th and 10th century Anglo-Saxon texts. Eleven-page dedication to the King; 206pp, 6 folding plates, an engraving of Charles II mounted with military formations deployed for battle and a fleet in the background as frontis. A detailed description on the constitution and operation of an army from a commander's viewpoint based on the author's considerable ECW experience. Folio (8-1/2 by 13 inches), contemporary full brown calf, Skillfully rebacked with blind-stamped spine, raised bands, red morocco spine label. First edition of former censor Roger L Estrange s classic version of Aesop s Fables, with copper-engraved frontispiece portrait of L Estrange and fine copperplate frontispiece of Aesop. In 1690 John Locke was the first to suggest Aesop as a beginning book for children. Shortly thereafter, Tory pamphleteer and onetime Surveyor of the Press, Roger L Estrange, was commissioned to produce this edition of fables, likely the first compiled expressly for children. He included many other fabulists besides Aesop, notably a selection from La Fontaine within 20 years of the first appearance of any of his fables in French. It is highly probable that this was their earliest appearance in English (Muir, 24).
