Hamburg: Hirundo Press, 1999. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Saltzwedel, Caroline. Number 11 of 30 copies, quarto size, [20] pp., signed by Kathleen Jamie and Caroline Saltzwedel. Caroline Saltzwedel, born in England, has lived in Hamburg since 1995 as a graphic artist and painter. She studied German at the Universities of Durham, Oxford and Bonn, and printed graphics at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford. In 1998 she founded the Hirundo Press for artists' books in small editions; her works are in numerous public and private collections including the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the British Library, the Bodleian Library, Stanford University, and the Widener Library (Harvard) among many others.
Caroline's works are often paired with original, new works of poetry such as this one: "The Green Woman / Die Grune" is a bilingual edition of three poems written by Kathleen Jamie which appeared simultaneously in her collection Jizzen (Picador, London 1999). The poems appear alongside four etchings by Caroline Saltzwedel, who also wrote the translations.
___DESCRIPTION: Original full green cloth lettered in green to upper board and backstrip, fore- and bottom edges uncut, blue endpapers, the poems are presented in both English and German, four three-color etchings signed and numbered by the artist in pencil, each with its own tissue guard, three full-page and one on the title page; Walbaum Antiqua type, Zerkall paper, quarto size (11" by 10 3/16"), [20] pp., limited edition, this number 11 of 30 copies, signed by the author and artist at the colophon.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, internally bright, no previous owner marks, in a perfect binding, and all original tissue guards intact; the copy is clean, crisp, as new.
