About This Item

[New Bedford, MA, 1840. 8 single leaves; paper browned and tearing at old folds. Original Whaling Lance Design. A group of documents related to whaling and particularly the innovations of Dr. J.D.B. Stillman's improved harpoon, including two drawings diagraming the harpoon, described thus: "A whaling lance inserted into the body of a whale makes the whale an accessory in his own capture by his efforts to escape." THe details of the documents are technical in that they explain the mechanical workings of the harpoon and are accompanied by observations and dimensions other harpoons. Also, included is a two page list of supplies for a whaling ship of approximately 50 items.

Augustus G. Moulton is listed in "Moulton Annals" (1906), p. 170, of New Bedford; further, his name appears on the bill of sale of the ship Charles W. Morgan in 1916.
