The title of this book is a metaphor that describes the author's time, along with other members of the A.I.F., as a prisoner of war at the hands of the Japanese from 1942 until 1945. A gunner in the 2/10th Field Regiment A.I.F., Russell Savage, along with other unit members, was captured in Singapore in 1942, sent to work on the Thai-Burma Railway, then sent to Japan, being torpedoed on the way and suffering appalling treatment at the hands of the Japanese.
