About This Item

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1934. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Remember in Maugham's The Razor's Edge, when Larry is asked what he wants to do with his life? He replies "Loaf". It's not a term that is much in use anymore, as it must have been when Maugham wrote his book and Overstreet published this. It is interesting though to read the DJ blurb and remember. this book was published in 1934. "Almost over night a new idea has come to us. It is the idea that at last we are to have more time to live our lives as we please. Hitherto we have been occupied with other things. We have grown work-wise. It is time now to grow leisure-wise. For while we recognize that work should bring its own satisfactions, it will still remain true that in our leisure life we shall find the means for cultivating the interests, powers, and delights that should be our human privilege." Some things never change. A near fine book with a previous ownership signature (and a quote from Ulysses), in a good dust jack.
