About This Item

Ginn and Company, 1896. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 1896, Ginn and Company; The Athenaeum Press. Good hardcover, full bound in red cloth boards with gilt lettering to cover and spine. Binding solid and square. Some light edge wear; corners lightly bumped. Previous owner's note in pencil to front free endpaper: "W F Thomas / W M College / Westminster / Maryland". W M College is "Western Maryland College" which is the original name of McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland - the name changed in 2002. Other lightly penciled notes on the front endpapers were erased at some point. From a contemporary advertisement for the book: "The 'Guide' is the joint work of two authors who have for years in close association carried on courses in Harvard University, and have had long experience in teaching.... [It] attempts to serve the needs of school children and their teachers, as well as college students and instructors and advanced investigators; to aid librarians and book buyers; and to be serviceable to all who are interested in American history and politics." Different sections lay out methods of study and instruction, and group principal events of American history into topics and provides special resources and targeted bibliographies for each group.
