About This Item

London.: Flicker Productions Limited., 1930. 2nd Edition . Original Wraps. Very Good/Very Good. A very good later edition of the 1930's Flicker Series. This being number 1 in this series and titled "H W Austin Flicker No. 1. Forehand and Backhand Drives". Condition is fantastic for a book that is over 80 years old. Staple rusty (as is common), Front and back cover present and bright. Outer boards are clear but slightly dusty. This book is a variant of the true first edition number 9 of the original series. Adverts for Slazengers on front and inside of front and back covers. A wonderful and rare item, and more so in this great condition. The Flicker Sports Series were published circa 1930s. The books were produced by Flicker Productions Ltd in England located at 113b Earl's Court Road, London, S.W.5, phone Frobisher 3277. The overall series contains 38 books. Each featured prominent athletes of the era. For example, Don Bradman is featured in book numbers 1, 2 and 3. Books #1-6 feature Cricket, #7-10 Tennis, #11-12 (including 11a,11b and 11c) Golf, #13 Lacrosse, #14 Football, #15 Swimming, #16 Hockey, #20 Greyhound Racing, #21 Badminton, #22-24 Skating and #25 Shooting. This first series was originally aimed at sports fans. A junior series began at numbers 31-38 which included two extremely rare Mickey Mouse titles number 36-(Cheese Trap & Fatty Boy) and number 37-(Cat-Catcher And Bubbles). These two featured a very early and hugely collected 1930's Mickey Mouse. Norman Loudon, who later went on to found Shepperton Film Studios, was at that time experimenting with high speed photography, producing flicker books which he thought could prove an invaluable aid to sportsmen looking to improve their technique by observing the top players in each field in great detail at each stage of their actions. A flicker book is a book that you flip through and by doing so it creates animation. Each book has approximately 100 pages and measures only 2 inches by 3 inches. The book works both forward and backward thus showing the viewer two different ways of best perfecting his or her sport.
