About This Item

From back cover: "James M. McPherson...walks us through Gettysburg, the site of the bloodiest and perhaps most significant battle ever fought on American soil. There, 165,000 soldiers met - 75,000 Confederate and 90,000 Union - and of them 11,000 were killed or mortally wounded....Today, over 1.300 monuments stand on that hallowed ground where the strength and tenacity exhibited for love of country helped define what it means to be an American. The illustrated tour on these pages tells the story of that struggle, enriched with over 100 vibrant images from those transformative days in July 1863, and today."
