Hampton and His Cavalry in '64 by Wells, Edward L - 1899

Richmond, Virginia: B.F. Johnson, 1899. First Edition. Octavo. 429 pages, 14 pages index, (4)pp. ads. illustrated. Hampton commanded the famed "Hampton's Legion." Following his recovery from a wound received in the early fighting of the Peninsula campaign in 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general and transferred to the cavalry. He fought in most of the eastern theatre's major engagements, taking command of Lee's cavalry after the death of Jeb Stuart in 1864. a key figure in the operations around Petersburg, he was later given a last ditch effort to stop Sherman's army as it marched to South Carolina. This book was given as a prize to Henry Patrick Wagener from his father Dr. A.P. Wagener at William & Mary for his success at the Lucas Academy in Charleston, South Carolina in 1899 where at age 8 he had the highest percentage of any in the school (97%) and he went on to become a physician and was a physician at Mayo Clinic where he passed away in 1970. Pasted down is the notice of Lucas Academy's commencement in 1899 with the information on young Henry's honors. Bound in dark blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt depicting a sword, spine gilt (most gilt has rubbed off), wear through to rear board front edge.
