Good in publisher's elaborate gilt-decorated cloth, all edges gilt, engraved title and a few other leaves loose but present, spine repaired, wear to edges and corners with fraying, scattered soiling but contents generally clean, and curiously with stamp of the Birmingham Assay Office on the front free endpaper.. First edition. One of the earliest English works to describe the metals, pigments, and processes employed in producing illuminated manuscripts.

De Hamel includes this work as one of the "great nineteenth-century picture books of medieval illumination," which were in turn used as pattern books for countless Victorian copies. De Hamel, Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts (2017).
