RMS Britannia [The First Cunard Liner] was an ocean liner of the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, later known as Cunard Steamship Company. She was launched on 5 February 1840, at the yard of Robert Duncan & Company in Greenock, Scotland. In January 1842.
"Let us suppose though you had the money and were keen to embrace the new technology. Step aboard then Cunard's first ship, the paddle steamer BRITANNIA, built on the Clyde by Robert Duncan, engines by Napier. You would be someone of some consequence. Your trunk would contain all the paraphenalia of a rich and important person. Your fellow passengers would be of similar background, breeding and fortune, or even the odd author, such as Charles Dickens."
quoted from the Glydsite Magainze website
Charles Dickens and his wife travelled to the United States on Britannia. In March 1849 she was sold by Cunard to the German Confederation Navy and was renamed SMS Barbarossa.
