Toronto: The Champlain Society, 1938. Hardcover. Very good. 550 copies of this volume printed, of which this is no. 333. The Publications of The Champlain Society XXIV. xxvi, 472, xii p. 25 cm. 4 illustrations. Red cloth hardcover with a little soiling to exterior. Thumbing to half title. Rough edges.

These collected letters were written almost exclusively to James Hargrave, a Hudson’s Bay Company trader who was employed initially by the North West Company, but from 1821 onwards by the HBC after the amalgamation of the rival firms. The letters were written at company posts ranging from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Pacific, and from the southernmost limits of the Company’s territory to the Arctic Circle. As the editor notes in his introduction: “They form what is probably a unique chronicle of the north and west in the days before newspapers” (p. xv).
