Magazine with disbound spine, short tears and light toning to edges, occasional foxing, small hole punch through mid right margin of pages, not affecting illustrations. The Thomas Nast cartoon on the back cover of this newspaper, A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion, represents his first use of the donkey to represent the Democratic party; this symbolism dates to the late 1820s but Nast's extensive use of the donkey secured its place as the Democratic symbol, just as his cartoons identified the elephant with the Republican vote. There are also two lovely single page illustrations of children with vintage toys at Christmas: "A Dream of Toys" and "The Dream Realized" and a single page illustration of Jewish interest: "High-Priest at Nablus Reading the Pentateuch" with accompanying article. .
