About This Item

Princeton, NJ./Jerusalem: Princeton University Press/Magnes Press, 1993. First English language edition. Hardcover. Quarto. 398pp. Purple and blue dust jacket, with white and black lettering on the front cover and spine. Maroon buckram boards with gilt lettering on the spine. The first English translation of Uffenheimer's classic work, originally published in Hebrew in 1968. In this examination of Hasidic thought, the author focuses on the contemplative aspects of Hasidism, rather than petitionary prayer. This edition of the work includes a revised introduction and two new chapters by the authors, as well as an appendix, containing a translation, history and analysis of one of the few extant text attributed to the Ba'al Shem Tov (the founder of Hasidic Judaism). Dust jacket with sunning to extremities, including the spine. Interior with sticker of the previous owner on the interior front cover. Dust jacket in very good-, binding and interior in near fine condition overall.
