Hate Parade

by New York Provo

  • Used
New York: The Open Press, 1967. 8 1/2 x 11", crudely mimeographed from typescript. A leaflet issued by the group reporting on a "Hate Parade" held that day, which marched from Columbus Circle to Tompkins Square Park, where the group held many events. The provocative event - certainly one of the stranger protests of the decade - is described in detail. The leaflet concludes with a paragraph on LSD, solicits donations for the Gallery Freestore, and proposes an upcoming Be-in at the Bronx Botanical Garden on Sunday, September 17, dating the leaflet to 1967. The New York Provo took its name and inspiration from the Dutch Provo, and was an antecedent group of the Yippies. A poor copy, with old folds, heavy toning and brittleness, and loss to extremities, including half of the title. The New York Provo seem to have used the worst paper possible, and any surviving examples of their handbills are rare.
