About This Item

New York: harles Scribner's Sons, 1937. Cloth. Very Good +/Very Good +. A very presentable, markedly above-average copy of the 1937 true 1st edition (with the letter 'A' and the Scribner seal to the copyright pg., and the 1937 date at both the title and copyright pages). Tight and VG+, with light offsetting along the inner hinges and pastedowns. And in a bright, price-intact ($2.50), VG+ dustjacket, with just a bit of light chipping (much less than one often encounters) at the front panel's upper tip and along the spine crown. Octavo, one of Hemingway's legendary movie tie-ins and his 9th published work.

Synopsis

To Have and Have Not is a 1937 novel by Ernest Hemingway about Harry Morgan, a fishing boat captain who runs contraband between Cuba and Florida. The novel depicts Harry as an essentially good man who is forced into blackmarket activity by economic forces beyond his control. Initially, his fishing charter Johnson tricks Harry by not paying back the money he owes him, and then escapes the country by airplane before Harry can realize what is going on.
