About This Item

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1880. First American Edition. First printing. Small octavo (19.5cm). Smooth-woven dark olive-drab cloth with titles in red on spine and front cover, publisher's monogram in red on rear cover; brown coated endpapers; viii,177,[1]pp + [6]pp publisher's ads. Minimal external wear, with an unobtrusive strip of fading to cloth at upper front cover; titles somewhat difficult to read, as usual; still a tight, unmarked, Very Good or better copy. In the Macmillan series "English Men of Letters," under the general editorship of John Morley.

A quite handsome copy of a book seldom found in nice condition (and which, to be clear, must have been somewhat plain even upon publication). The American edition went into only a single printing and is somewhat scarcer than the London edition, which preceded it by some months. EDEL & LAURENCE A12.b.
