First edition, first state, with this work listed as 'in preparation' to the publisher's advertisements at the rear.James gives an extended consideration to each of Hawthorne's novels, and a selection of his short stories. An examination of Hawthorne's life, and of some of his nonfiction, is also provided.With four pages of advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with minor discolouration to back strip. Hinges strained but firmly held. Significant closed tear at head of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned to perimeters, otherwise clean and bright. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
