New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1879. An early biographical and critical study by James, considered somewhat conflicted as he himself struggled with Hawthorne's influence. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, part of the series "English Men of Letters" edited by (Lord) John Morley (1838-1923), himself certainly a man of letters. Brown cloth binding with red titling on front cover and spine. Clean text; viii, 177 pages, with six pages of publisher adverts in the rear (includes series published and in preparation). Very light bumps; front hinge is cracked but holding nicely. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
