About This Item

Harrisburg: Theo. F. Scheffer. Good. 1868. reprint. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 72 pages; No date given [circa 1860's] Theo. F. Scheffer, Harrisburg. HC in publisher's quarter burgundy cloth backed spine with pictorial paper covered boards. Spine unlettered, as issued. Early American printing of this popular didactic emblem book. Generally claimed as an 1842 printing, but wear to the type suggests something later and the binding materials and paper suggest 1860's - 1870's. Hinges tender but sound. Light soiling and mild damp evidence to covers; a bump and stress crease to the top front corner of the cover. Original endleaves were of much cheaper paper than the paper used for the text block, with the result that they have toned the title page and terminal printed leaf. The endpapers had cracked and detached; we have discarded them as their acid content can only further harm the balance. Contents complete and generally clean with english language reproductions of the original engraved emblems. Illustrated with ten full page woodcut plates. The woodcuts symbolically depict various states of a person's heart to the extent they are on the path to salvation or backsliding to Satan. Good .
