See the following book ID rja529815 for history of the development of the same city's trams of Glasgow.
Jack House has spent most of his life in journalism soaking up the history and flavour of Glasgow, and he probably knows more about it than any man alive.
He begins with a church and a fishing village (Glasgow was founded by Saint Mungo in the 6thC) and traces the progress of Glasgow, growing street by street until the present day (then 1965).His plan is,in fact, the street plan of the centre of the city, and he describes each new building development in its time and sketches in the characters of the day,the social customs, and brief histories of the great events, reported faithfully but, when he feels like it,subjectively.
The author's knowledge of Glasgow's history is prodigious - how many people, for instance, know that the last man to be hanged in Glasgow,in 1865,was Dr Edward William Pritchard,'The Human Crocodile',who kissed his victim on the lips in her coffin after he had murdered her? There is a lot about food and drink, statues,The Hell-Fire Club and 'Charlies',the Abstainer's Union concerts, bodysnatchers, and the Malt Tax Riots. Theatrical reminiscences includes the Scotia music hall, Harry Lauder,Tommy Lorne and up to Andy Stewart.
The story finishes with a view of the city centre today (again, then 1965),and the new architectural and social trends.Clifford Hanley, fellow Glaswegian, writes: 'I don't think I would be over-effusive to say that no Glaswegian's bookshelf would be complete without this first really exhaustive popular history'.
The material is extremely readable and easy to absorb in spite of its range. The book is completed with an outstanding selection of well-known and little known engravings, plans, photographs and drawings.
