Frontis: Portrait of Henry VIII (about 1543) from the painting after Holbein.in the Royal Collection in Windsor Castle. Pages are clean, no highlighting, no markings of any kind, moderately toned. Hackett has set out to show what Henry VIII was REALLY like. There are differing opinions about this--was he a lion or a weakling; was he iron-willed or flabby; was he a savior of a waster? So Hackett tries to see human nature apart from the tyranny of politics and the obsessions of patriotism and to separate reliable from unrealiable evidence and to see him as King but also to see the man behind state policies. He is viewed in his boyhood and also in his many marriages. His various wives are also viewed in detail. Interesting reading about English history in the 16th century. xii + 452 pages indexed. 5.75 x 8.5 inches. 1931, Garden City Publishing, Garden City, New York, USA
