About This Item

Charles Scribner's Sons. Good. 1927 signed and inscribed first edition, Charles Scribner's Sons (NY), 6 1/2 x 9 inches tall blue cloth hardbound, no dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, vii, [5], 325 pp. Light to moderate soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with a small (1/8-inch) hole to the lower spine. Nicely inscribed and signed by the author on the blank front free-endpaper, to American botanist and science historian Dr. Conway Zirkle (1895-1972), to whom a debt of gratitude is paid in the preface. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~SP18~ Edward Murray East (1879-1938) was an American plant geneticist, botanist, agronomist and eugenisist. He is known for his experiments that led to the development of hybrid corn. He worked at the Bussey Institute of Harvard University where he performed a key experiment showing the outcome of crosses between lines that differ in a quantitative trait. Heredity and Human Affairs was preceded by East's earlier work on eugenics, Mankind at the Crossroads (1923).
