Elave's dedicated mission is to seek leave for his dead master to be buried in th eAbbey grounds. But William has at one time been reproved for heretical views and Gerbert tries to block the boy's plea. After an unguarded moment Elave himself is then charged with heresy and a capital charge is brought against him; the maid Fortunata, whom Elave adores, becomes a reluctant witness for the prosecution. A violent death follows from these conflicts and tensions and Brother Cadfael is once again called upon to turn detective. Further mystery arises with the contents of a marvelous treasure box, part of Elaves luggage and Fortunatas dowry..
