An interesting collection of biographies of inventors, with a history of the first steam engine, in a lovely prize binding by the Relfe Brothers. The first edition of this work in a full calf prize binding, with gold tooling to the boards, spine and square, and marbled end papers and edges. Gilt crest of Winchester House School, Westgate to the front board. Binder's stamp of Relfe Brothers, London, to the verso of the front free end paper. Ink inscription to the front blank by Winchester House School, Westgate, awarding this book as a prize, dated 1901. A collection of nine biographies of inventors and scientists, with a history of the first steam engine, by Thomas Crompton Lewis. These biographies include James Watt, George Stephenson, Sir Richard Arkwright, Samuel Crompton, Henry Maudsley, Joseph Clement, James Nasmyth, Sir Joseph Whitworth and Charles Babbage. In a full calf prize binding. Externally bright, though rubbed to the joints, extremities and head and tail of the spine. Loss of leather to the lower corner of the rear board, and the lower corner of each square. Small crack to the tail of the rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good
