About This Item

A new chocolate ice product from America advertised in Amsterdam.

- Lithographed poster - André Vlaanderen (1881-1955). Het nieuwste snufje uit Amerika: Norico, choco-glace. Amsterdamsche Banketbakkers IJscompagnie (IJsco). Fine lithograph in colour. (Amsterdam, ca. 1928-1929). 67 x 36 cm.

Very rare poster, no other copy found. Sadly I could not yet find information about this new chocolate ice, allegedly invented in America. However the story of the 'IJscompagnie' has been well documented. The 'IJscompagnie' (= Ice Company) was a brand name of a company of confectioners who operated ice cream carts. This name was shortened into 'IJsco' and became the household name in the Netherlands for ice sold in scoops. The oldest Dutch 'IJscompagnie' was probably that of Amsterdam. The newspaper 'De Courant' of August 28, 1913 mentions on that day the opening of a vanilla ice factory by the 'N.V. Automatische IJscompagnie der Amsterdamsche Banketbakkers' at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal 320, in Amsterdam. The poster designer André Vlaanderen (Amsterdam 1881- Bruges 1955) was a Dutch graphic artist, known for his many advertisement designs. After his education at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam, he worked as a graphic designer for the wellknown architect Eduard Cuypers from 1899 to 1905. After 1905 he started successfully his own bussines, making posters, all kinds of advertising material, bookdesigns, etcetera. In 1929 he moved to Belgium (Ghent and Bruges). - Very tiny retouches in outer lower corners, vague former fold in middle, backed with Chinese paper. - Good copy.

PROVENANCE: From the estate of the artist; thence by descent. - Cf. Newspaper article by Ewoud Sanders: https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/1995/07/20/waarom-een-ijsco-ijsco-heet-7275008-a1087667 and article by Roland de Bonth: https://neerlandistiek.nl/2021/05/met-de-y-van-ysco/
