About This Item

Amsterdam: Chez Jaques le Jeune [Daniel Elzevir], 1671. 176pp, [2]. Later gilt-tooled speckled calf. Lightly rubbed. Recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP, title page a trifle dusty. The first Elzevir edition (printed in the year after the original edition published by Thomas Jolly at Paris), of a curious work, commonly attributed to French philosopher, philologist, and historian François de La Mothe Le Vayer (1588- 1672), that revels in obscenity and mockery. Presented in six parts, the most notable being the second that deals with Parties appellees honteuses aux hommes et aux femmes. There is an allusion also to an extraordinary form of worship among the indigenous North American Huastec people of the Pánuco. . 12mo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
