About This Item

Beaufort, South Carolina: Beaufort Book Co., 1971. 2nd Printing. . Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good-. VG+/VG/2nd prntng/Signed. This is a short biography of a ledgendary southern sheriff, James Edwin McTeer. At one time the youngest sheriff in the United States, McTeer took care of Beaufort for 37 years. He was thought to be a hoodoo, root, conjure man throughout the community and his help in spiritual matters was held in high regard. People traveled from surrounding counties to seek his advice. After he retired, he became an author; this is one of the four book written by him. In 1981 shortly after his death, a bridge linking the islands to the mainland was named for him. I can't think of a more fitting tribute. Book Condition is Very Good+; green cloth over boards with red lettering to spine. 101 pp. First Edition, 2nd printing, signed and inscribed by McTeer on the front free endpaper," To Betty from her friend, Sincerely J.Ed McTeer". Tight binding, white pages with no foxing, no soiling, no markings. Green cloth does show a few brown marks on front panel. Some light rubbing to heel and head of both panels. Dust Jacket Condition is Very Good-; clean matte jacket with considerable wear but has retained bright color. Large chip to front panel, and another at top rear panel. Edgewear along bottom of jacket and at all corners. Covered with a mylar dust jacket. Autographed sticker on outside of mylar jacket on spine. A wonderful read about another kind of Southern Sheriff.
