Description:
A First UK printing published by Macmillan, London in 1970. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with the publisher's original green boards and gilt titling. Some mild pushing at the spine ends. Mild toning of the page edges and text-block due to the quality of the paper used. Some very light spotting to the text block. One penned inscription to the upper front end paper: 'Review Copy. John P. White, ix.70'. The WRAPPER is complete and in VERY GOOD+ condition. Minor edge-wear with a 3cm closed tear to the upper rear cover. Some toning to the folds, spine and upper cover edges. The Justin Todd wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Signed (without dedication) by David Lodge directly to the title page and a ticket for the signing event accompanies the book as provenance. This title was one of the first to be printed by computer and the process was deeply flawed, resulting in significant textual errors, and Lodge was also disappointed with the dust…

The First UK printing published by Faber and Faber, London in 1974. The BOOK and the WRAPPER are both in near Fine condition. Free from inscriptions and a hint of spotting to the lower rear wrapper flap. The wrapper is protected in removable Brodart archival cover. The collection is the last publication of new poetry by Larkin before his death in 1985, and it contains some of his most famous poems, including the title piece, 'High Windows', 'Dublinesque', and 'This Be The Verse' (Containing the memorable lines : 'They f--- you up, your mom and dad / They may not mean to, but they do/ .Man hands on misery to man. / It deepens like a coastal shelf. / Get out as early as you can, / And don't have any kids yourself.'). Loosely laid in is a typed letter, dated 26th April 1976, and signed by Philip Larkin. The letter is on 'The University of Hull' headed paper (Larkin was the librarian for the University). In the letter, Larkin refers to his poem 'Love' and gives his reasoning for not including it in this collection. He goes on to say : ' The writing of poems is a quite unpredictable business, but I should think it is most unlikely that I should have enough for a collection before 1984 at the earliest'.'When I talked about 'assiduity' I meant that I have in my time given a number of interviews (they are probably listed in Timms) and that reading them would show my opinions on most questions it occurs to people to ask me'. The letter has been folded twice but is in Fine condition. Letters signed by Philip Larkin are scarce more-so relating to his poetry. Collectible. More images available on request. Description:
A First UK printing published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1972. The BOOK is in near FINE condition. Some mild pushing at the spine tips and a little dustiness to the upper text block. A very tight and clean copy. The WRAPPER is complete and in VERY GOOD++ or better condition. A little edge-wear, creasing and rubbing which is more pronounced at the upper spine (see images). A small 1.3 cm closed tear to the front upper cover, with a small area of supporting tape to the verso. A small 0.9 cm closed tear to the lower rear edge. The red colouring of the spine is completely unfaded. This is a very nice example of a wrapper that is notoriously prone to fading and wear. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The book has been Signed (without dedication) by John Berger to the title page. A 'Booker Prize' winning title and increasingly elusive to find as a signed title. A very sharp copy. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
