Original brown-coated free-endpapers printed with adverts, new plain endpapers. Publisher's cloth, gilt, re-backed with utilitarian but tasteful plain cloth to match, with simple gilt lettering. Boards a little worn and marked, corners bruised, upper corners rounded. Contents clean and tight, a little reading wear, title pages slightly marked and a few tissue guards nicked at edges; vol. I with neat contemporary manuscript addition to the verso of the half-title 'Extract fomr the Address of the President of the Royal Society on presenting the Medal to J. Hooker...'; small contemporary signatures to the head of the title pages in the same hand as the manuscript note, early newspaper cutting 'Biographical Notices -Joseph Hooker' tipped onto front free end paper of vol.
