The introduction is by John Russell, an art critic for the NYT. " The problem of placing the right line in the right place has absorbed all my interests across these many years.I am still enchanted when an unaccountable line describes and communicates the inexplicable." The author. For more than fifty years the well placed lines of Al Hirschfeld have appeared in the Sunday drama section of The NYT. It is probably safe to say that no major personality in the entertainment world has escaped caricature by this witty and benevolent artist. " To be a star on Broadway is to have one's name in lights, yes, but it is also, more significantly to be drawn by Hirschfeld." Collected in this volume are more than 200 of Hirschfeld's most recent drawings ( 1979) of the most famous stars of Broadway, Hollywood, television, opera and ballet.
