First three books are very slightly soft on the spine ends. The dustjackets are fine. These are the first printings of the American first editions of the three books comprising Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. THE GOLDEN COMPASS and THE SUBTLE KNIFE are both first American editions. THE AMBER SPYGLASS is the true first edition, the American edition preceding the British, and is the only children's book to have been nominated for the Booker Prize or to have won the Whitbread Prize. The complete number lines are present beginning with "1." The first two books are in paper-covered boards with gold-stamped cloth spines, the third in illustrated paper boards with a 3.5" diameter opening in the dustjacket. Each book is essentially as new, unread. This is a beautiful set of one of the most acclaimed works for young people in the latter part of the twentieth century. The set is accompanied by a signed British 1st edition/1st printing of the short sequel LYRA'S OXFORD (Oxford: David Fickling Books, 2003) and a double-signed British limited edition of the short sequel ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE NORTH (Oxford; David Fickling Books, 2008; slipcased, copy no. 1303 of 1500), both illustrated by John Lawrence. This deluxe package also includes the hard-to-find paper "The Alethiometer" given out to patrons of the play "His Dark Materials" produced by the National Theatre, London (tiny white spot on face - publisher's defect?), as well as the "Golden Compass Alethiometer Pocket Watch" issued as a movie tie-in promotional item by Golden Screen Cinemas, Malaysia, and Coca-Cola. The watch is in a hinged ornamental gold case, 1.75" dia., with a 12" long gold chain and pocket clip, housed in a 3.5" dia. padded tin box. All five books signed by Philip Pullman.

Additional postage may be required on this set.

A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of… Read More
