Macon (France): Protat Freres. Very Good+. 1866. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. xlv, 451 ; xv, 618 pages; Two volume set in a handsome contemporary binding: Plum-brown morocco spines over rose & black pattern printed paper covered boards, marbled endpapers. Minor bumping to the lower corners, a few minor abrasions to the rear gutters of the spines, but a fresh and nice looking binding from the time of publication of this two volume set, a significant contribution to mediaeval history; (the account of the Bishops goes up to the beginning of the 19th century). Published 1866, 1867. With full page lithographic frontispieces to each volume, and a large folding map (in excellent condition, with no tears or damage at the folds). Originally published in printed wrappers. This set was bound with an owner's idenification in gilt at the foot of each spine: "H. Dor." Suggestions of the identity of this owner gratefully received. Fairly scarce, even institutionally. OCLC: 18881384 locates sets in UCal Berkeley, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, the Universities of Kansas, and Pennsylvania, Waseda Univ. in Japan, and the British Library. .
