Paris: Grégoire duPuis, 1699. Third Edition Thus. Hardcover. Good+. 16mo. Pp. [4], 614 [22 index]. French language. Re-cased and rebacked with a faux-leather backstrip, gilt rules and lettering. Original boards: paneled calf, sprinkled edges. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Boards rubbed, top edge soiled, leaves crisp and bright. The life and reign of Roman Emperor Theodosius I the Great by the Bishop of Nîmes, renowned orator and tutor to the Dauphin. With the bookplate of the first Duchess of Kent, Jemima Crew (1675 - 1728). She was married to Henry Gray, an unpopular court figure known as "Bug" -- a sobriquet earned for rich body odor -- who later bought the dukedom.
