London: Printed by James Flesher for Cornelius Bee, 1652. Hardcover. Good. Two Volumes folio contemporary speckled leather (worn, both lacking most of original spine leather but all cords intact and covers well attached) All edges sprinkled red. Doncaster Free Library 1869 bookplates on pastedown of each volume. Vol.I half-title + titlepage in red & black +[8]pp to reader + L [50pp] preface signed by John Selden, +[8]pp & 8pp prelims +1284 numbered columns 2 per page; Vol.II half-title/blank verso + columns 1289-2768 + variant readings, Glossary, addenda and corrections in about 200 unnumbered columns. Front and rear of each volume with edge browning and some foxing, but paper of most pages in crisp tight conditon. *Twysden explains in his Latin preface to Vol.I that several of these chronicles were found in Cotton MSS identified by John Selden, who also made a major contribution to the editing work. The 9 early English Church chroniclers included (after Simeon of Durham) are: Johannes and Ricardus Priores Hagustaldenses (Hexham), Ailredus Abbas Rievallensis (Rievaulx), Radulphus de Diceto Londoniensis, Johannes Brompton Jornallensis, Gervasius Monachus Dorobornensis, Thomas Stubbs Dominicanus, Gulielmus Thorn Cantuariensis and Henricus Knighton Leicestrensis, whose chronicle continues through the reign of Richard II, followed by some documents relating to King Henry IV.
