Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1937. First Edition; rare collectible volume. 8vo size brown clothbound hardcover with orange titles on spine and front cover; 315 pages. Firmly bound. Author Jessie Fenton tells the fictionalized story of Lonny, a teenage boy gone bad, from his petty thievery in his hometown to his hopping a freight train and befriending a man who teaches him to pass bogus check and steal cars within hours of their meeting. Lonny ends up in reform school, becomes a hardened criminal and kills a man during a bank robbery. He dies in the electric chair at Sing Sing. We find the book has some of that classic film noir vibe. Dusty top, light wear or soil to cover and spine; some fingermarks on cover. Pages are toned; there is some light tanning to the inside covers. Thanks for shopping with us. 100% of your purchase benefits charity and supports literacy and life-long learning. . First. Cloth. Red calf spine with red cloth boards. Gilt banding and titles on the spine. Dimensions are for one volume. A very clean and well bound renditionJames Anthony Froude FRSE (23 April 1818 – 20 October 1894) was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. From his upbringing amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. Froude turned to writing history, becoming one of the best known historians of his time for his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. Inspired by Thomas Carlyle, Froude's historical writings were often fiercely polemical, earning him a number of outspoken opponents. Froude continued to be controversial up until his death for his Life of Carlyle, which he published along with personal writings of Thomas and Jane Welsh… Read More

The text is illustrated with Forty-One (41) illustrations of various sizes by J. R. Weguelin. First published in 1842, this QUITE SCARCE JACKETED volume presents great Roman tales here retold by Thomas Babington Macaulay (also known as Lord Macaulay). In four of these, Macaulay recounts in poetic form four heroic episodes from early Roman lore with strong dramatic and tragic themes. Macaulay also included two poems inspired by more recent history: Ivry and The Armada. The narrative poems, or lays, by Thomas Babington Macaulay, are titled "Horatius" [which describes how Publius Horatius and two companions, Spurius Lartius and Titus Herminius, hold the Sublician bridge, the only span crossing the Tiber at Rome, against the Etruscan army of Lars Porsena, King of Clusium, each of them willing to die in order to prevent the enemy from crossing the bridge, and sacking the otherwise ill-defended city.] "The Battle of Lake Regillus" [which celebrates the Roman victory over the Latin League at the Battle of…
