Original maroon sheep and dark brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind, folio (18 x 15 inches), 102 pp. Profusely illustrated with 15 double-page colored maps, 2 single-page colored maps; 10 full-page, 50 half-page, and 55 smaller lithographed views. 5 lithographed portraits of some of Sonoma County's original settlers: Mariano G. Vallejo; Franklin Bedwell; Harmon Heald; Cyrus Alexander; Jacob Snyder. Wear to spine ends (about 1/2" at bottom of spine lost), mild wear to corners, endpapers mildly soiled, else a near fine copy, very clean internally and overall remarkably well-preserved.

Sonoma County, one of the original 27 California counties, created and named in February 1850, has remained one of California's most beautiful locales. With small cities still resisting sprawl, surrounded by an extraordinarily varied landscape of lush meadows, forests, vinyards, rolling hills, and a coastline that alternates sandy beaches with rocky tidepools. In the 1870s, Sonoma County was truly idyllic, as evidenced here in the dozens of views of farms and homesteads shown nestled into a pristine landscape. Text includes a history of the county, biographical sketches of notable citizens, and tables of information about climate, crops, population, etc. One of the most lavishly illustrated and among the earliest (preceded only by Santa Clara in 1876) and rarest of the California county historical atlases.
