Early days in Richland County, OH, including the communities of Mansfield, Bellville, Lexington, Independence, Lucas, Plymouth, Shelby and Shiloh, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 100 Page Booklet of excerpts reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, A.J. Baughman's History of Richland County Ohio, The Ohio Guide (1940 WPA project), newspaper clippings, and other sources. The spiral-bound booklet, is printed on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: the two Blockhouses of 1812, early settlers, Indian incidents, Col. Jared Mansfield and his wife, the life of Johnny Appleseed, the Ohio-Michigan boundary dispute, unusual notations from early government records, Mansfield of 1858, Mansfield of 1908, Mansfield Parks, Early Railroads, early telephone service, Soldiers of the Revolution, Mexican War and Civil War, the organization of McLaughlin Post of the Grand Army of the Republic; the individual histories of Shelby, Plymouth, and Lexington; and newspaper stories from the 1960s on Gatton Rocks, Coulter, area ghosts, etc. GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses, and biographies of Senator John Sherman, author of the Sherman Anti-Trust Law, Judge Jacob Brinkerhoff, Mordecai Bartley, Gen. Roeliff Brinkerhoff, Michael D. Harter, and Dr. William Bushnell. Information from the hard-to-find WPA writer's project book takes a look at Mansfield in 1940, pointing out such landmarks as the Pioneer Blockhouse, the John Chapman Monument, St. Luke's Lutheran Church's Baptismal Font, Manfield's Friendly House, the Doolittle House, etc. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in the county, a map identifying Ohio's 88 counties and a map of 1805 Ohio are also included. .
