Yokohama: Kelly & Walsh, [1909]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. xiv, 842 p. + maps. 23 cm. 11 double page colour lithograph maps at rear followed by 2 b&w plans of Tokyo and Kyoto. Frontispiece and b&w drawings throughout text. 300 illustrations altogether according to title page. Brown cloth with black print on front, gold on spine. Small dent to edge of front board and some shelf wear to edges. Tears in spine ends. Bookplate on a front page.
Front cover title "Papinot's Dictionary. History and Geography of Japan." Arranged alphabetically, this encyclopedia provides a wealth of scholarly information, including an atlas of Japan with Taiwan, Korea, Manchuria and Sakhalin. 18 appendices, including a list of "The 7 generations of celestial Spirits," a chronological list of emperors, a list of Shogun, a list of Nengo, as well as the best explanation of the computations of years, months, days, hours, etc. preceding the Meiji restoration.
