On 26 July 1953 the Moncada Barracks were attacked by a small group of men led by Fidel Castro. The barracks were manned by troops of the then Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, and, the majority of the group were killed or imprisoned. One of the imprisoned was a lawyer by the name of Fidel Castro, and, on 16 October of the same year he delivered his long self-defence speech, of which this book reproduces. For, as the front fold over panel blurb says " ... the speech outlines the programme of reforms which the successful revolution later put into practice.
